Anyone, who still thinks cowboys are sexy? In the night we became REAL men. Or heros? We will cry you under the table and one thing is certain: the fries at the pool have more fat than my butt. Someone had to win the mating dance. And lose the antler battle. Of course, we can be a band just the two of us. Die Nacht in der wir Männer wurden (The Night We Became Men) is a “short” physical theatre piece with night life vibes, drag and original live music. It deals with and makes an attempt at positiv forms of modern masculinity. From a non-binary and trans masculine perspective the (i)dentityteam asks: what is masculinity or maleness actually and how do we want to be masculine? To answer this the team makes use of a wide range of artistic elements such as movement, choreography, music, stand up comedy, acting and of course drag! What awaits you is a humorous, artistic and raw deep dive into the open pool of identity building, puberty, coming-outs and transition. There are songs about emotions and masculine roles in relationships; there are cowboys, swimwear styles and mating dances; but first and foremost the important question is asked: is it masculine now?
S. Rudat & das (i)dentityteam work in holistic processes structured by interests and areas of expertise rather than hierarchies. Their work is poetic, political, sensual and true to artistic impulse. A respectful approach that strengthens the boundaries of individual team members, as well as a vulnerable addressing of conflicts and socially controversial topics, are just as much a part of their working practice as the artistic work itself. Their previous works, ‘Defining (i)dentity’ and ‘Shame you WHAT?!’ have been shown at the FAVORITEN Festival in Dortmund, as well as at various venues and festivals. From 2020 to 2022, the (i)dentityteam was part of the theatre network FREISCHWIMMEN; from 2023 to 2025, the company received conceptual funding from the state of North Rhine-Westphalia.
