Hosenrolle (Breeches Role)

A theatre play about the repression of the self-determined feminine in the arts

An author on the threshold of publishing her book and is suddenly faced with an important decision. Should she use another name than her own to gain more recognition and visibility? Pseudonym? Without pseudonym? Female? Male? Unisex? And what name?

In the performance Hosenrolle (Breeches role), Sepidar Theater examines the censorship of female identity in the arts. They negotiate the disappearance as well as the targeted strengthening of female identities and pose the question of whether the absence of femininity is merely an effective instrument of patriarchy or whether the appropriation of male identities can perhaps even be an emancipatory act. In a performative interplay of acting, movement, shadow theatre and music, the ensemble challenges the repression of femininity between self determination and outside pressures and takes a hard look at counter proposals to existing forms.
